I-765 Online Filing Now Available for F-1 OPT Applicants

As of today, April 12, 2021, F-1 students applying for optional practical training (“OPT”) may file their I-765 Applications for Employment Authorization here. I-765 online filing is only available for pre-completion OPT, post-completion OPT, and 24-month OPT extensions for STEM degree holders.

What if you are filing Form I-765 for an eligibility category not listed above?

Applicants filing Form I-765 for any category other than the three OPT categories listed above must continue to file paper petitions with USCIS.

Is online filing the only way to submit Form I-765 for F-1 OPT applicants?

No, F-1 OPT applicants may continue to file paper I-765 applications with USCIS if they prefer. Direct filing addresses for paper I-765 applications can be found here.

Do you have to make a myUSCIS account in order to submit the Form I-765 online?

Yes, applicants will be prompted to create a myUSCIS account before completing the Form I-765 in order to track the status and receive electronic notices regarding their application.

Before filing Form I-765 online, make copies of all documentation you are submitting. The copies should be stored in a safe place and can be used as reference in case you need to contact USCIS regarding your application.
